About the Author
With over 25 books and e-books written about Mercedes-Benz cars, Bernd S. Koehling has proven to be an authority on the brand. Those books cover cars from the 1947 170V to the 2012 SL R231.
Bernd has been involved in the Mercedes scene since the early 1970s, when he restored his first 170 Cabrio B. Since then he has not only owned many classic Mercedes including a 220S, 300d Adenauer, 200D, 250SE, 280SE coupe 3.5, 300SEL, 350SL, 280E, 450SE, SLK230, he has also gained a wealth of knowledge and experience, which he shares with his readers in his books. Bernd has always considered Mercedes one of his favorite car manufacturers and has driven almost all Mercedes models built since the 1950s. His other weakness revolves around British cars, here especially Jaguar and Alvis.

With his journalistic knowledge, Bernard S. Kehling has written a wonderful book about future SL Mercedes-Benz classics. In my opinion, this book has a large scope of reference material and will be the bible for anyone looking to purchase a keys ready SL. This book provides information for the enthusiast and novice alike, who want the luxury and power of a newer SL.
It opens the door to every model made from 1971 to 2013. This is a through comprehensive study including specifications, optional equipment, engines and changes. Bernd also covers special models by Mercedes-Benz and outside venders (known as tuners, such as AMG and Koenig, as well as others) that did modifications on the SL. He also includes European models and engines offered until 1990.
The information in this book is meticulously written out in an easily read format with plenty of pictures. The back of the book has a list of Technical Specifications as well. It will assist both enthusiasts and novices with making a wise decision on which of these wonderful new generation SLs to buy.
But Bernd does not stop there. He also enthralls us with some little known stories of the rallying done with the R107 and R107C. This work was done under the wing of Eric Waxenberger (the chief engineer for Mercedes-Benz at the time). There is also discussions of how this influenced the design of the 350 SL and it’s successor, the 500 SL.
You will not be disappointed. There is so much to discover about this book. I will leave it up to you to come away with a wealth of knowledge and possibly a future classic to meet your needs.
