About the Author
Miriam Beloglovsky, MA, is a professor of Early Childhood Education at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, CA, and has had the pleasure of advising and guiding students for over twenty-five years. She is a strong advocate for children, youth and families and consults for programs such as My Street of Dreams. She has served as a keynote speaker, presenter and board member to a number of organizations and conferences.

Lisa Daly, MA, is professor of Early Childhood Education at Folsom Lake College in Folsom, CA. She has over 30 years experience as an early childhood teacher, director, and educator. She has served on community and AEYC boards, including the state-wide Child Development Training Consortium advisory board. She is passionate about creative arts and has presented numerous workshops for educators on art, storytelling, language and literacy, sensory experiences, music and movement.

! was so glad to see a Loose Parts book written especially for tots! I loved the first Loose Parts book and I see everyday how prospective teachers really do not understand how to incorporate loose parts in helping tots safely learn with them. This book has mostly photographs of thousands of ideas. It is more difficult to find things specifically for kids under three and this volume does not disappoint!

This is going to be a good resource for parents but, I feel there are way more pictures than actual information. Not that I don't like pictures. I was looking for something with more guidance for parents as far as making and using items.

Love Warm Springs

I met and liked this character in Safe At Home and wondered how she pulled herself back into a normal life after the terrifying thing that happened to her. It was compelling to watch an engaging woman battle with herself, her feelings of having to prove she can be successful and happy, and her partially mended broken heart in order to weigh her desires against those of others and to honor her own value in the light of her less than wonderful treatment from the three men she cares about who derailed the life of her dreams. I’ve loved all the Warm Springs stories and hope the next one is about the hero’s sis, a sassy troublemaker headed off to medical school.

Like the drama of sports and behind-the-scenes family life? This one is for you. Running Home follows the heartbreak which can happen when a man jumps to play professional baseball and leaves his old flame behind to pick up the pieces… but then, years later, comes back to claim her heart.

Adam is the male romantic interest. He is forceful but sweet, often doing his best to help out his friends. The female romantic interest, Jenny, has a need to prove herself in her career, and in her life. She needs to prove she has not been left by the wayside and is, in fact, doing something with her life. She also needs to prove that an alluded-to attack by a man who leaves her scarred has not stopped her from being independent, even if it has changed her taste in cars.

The chemistry between these two protagonists is electric. Jenny is drawn to Adam like he fills that piece of her which has been empty since he left, and their kisses are steamy, and melting.

Ms. Kirby has done a great job of picking a realistic, rural setting and setting up an initial battle of wills, but the pace of the book quite slow and is more literary romance than the usual fluff. It has a solid backbone and is underlaid by the disappointment of first love broken off. This was not a deal breaker for me, but it was not what I initially expected. Make sure you are in the mood for a leisurely romance for this tale, with plenty of background trips to shop for a friend’s wedding. These two protagonists do not have a romantic relationship in isolation and it is definitely not all about them.

In addition to the relatively slower pace, this book takes advantage of a conflict between Jenny and an ex-lover towards the last third of the book. I didn’t like how he suddenly became ten times more caustic towards Jenny than before. I felt it was too dramatic and an almost unbelievable turnaround for someone supposedly in love previously. I also felt Jenny’s refusal to listen to Adam’s explanations later on was a very childish reaction. I can see why she may have wanted to protect her heart, but it felt like a more contrived than natural reaction, used to add tension to the final will-they or won’t-they drama.

That said, the kisses between Adam and Jenny were not just steamy but boiled over in a quick romp and a longer exploration in the bedroom which left their previous romantic, adolescent encounters in the dust. The only downside to these trysts was that, for those of us who fancy a little more juice in the bedroom details, the petting stopped before or skimmed over the details of release, causing this novel to be somewhere between our sensual and spicy heat ratings.

In short, Running Home is a grown-up romance which follows characters who have grown into themselves and have things to prove, to themselves and their friends. In the end, they prove these things best together, after they’re quite done with blistering kisses, sultry looks and a creaking bed. Their friends and community are more than happy for them in a traditional childhood romance made good.

Running Home which is Book #2 in the Warm Springs Trilogy focuses on the story of Jenny. She was the real estate agent and friend of Samantha's who was kidnapped near the end of Book #1. This book picks up several months later , after surviving the ordeal of kidnapping, Jenny is finally moving on with her life and has a great job as the local real estate agent, she is up for the award of Top agent and she has an amazing boyfriend - one who is safe and reliable. That is until she is offered a job at work to show a wealthy new client around a few houses , that wealthy client turns out to be Adam Hamilton - a professional baseball player and her first love , he is the guy who broke her heart when he just up and left to play for the big leagues.After suffering an injury, he has decided to retire from playing and what better place to come back and settle down than their hometown. He also has his eyes set on a second chance with Jenny but of course she is taken. Can he persuade Jenny to dump her boyfriend and give him a second chance ? Can he get Jenny to forgive him for his past mistakes and win her back ? In Running Home , time is of the essence for Adam as if he doesn't hurry up and make his move - she may very well be engaged and married to her current boyfriend ?

Not a "SHOP MANUAL" but it is a GREAT HISTORY of the MK IV

David Fletcher has compiled the most complete history of the MK IV that is available today. The first chapter describes how the Mk IV's predecessors, "Little Willie," the Mk I, Mk II and Mk III, could be rightly described as "prototypes" to the eventual 1917 production of the Mk IV. Fletcher uses this chapter to discuss the basic structure of the tanks, including armor composition. It goes on to describe the Mk IV production and vehicle variants.

Chapter II covers the "Anatomy of the Mark IV" by introducing the reader to a restored Mk IV, but mostly through period illustrations and informative text. A chapter on armaments follows, again using a combination of a few photos of a restored Mk IV with very strong period illustrations. Fletcher describes these inner workings in a way that is both informative and easy to understand.

The book then delves into a topic that most modelers and wargamers will value: Camouflage, paint and markings. Tankers devised a system of identifying the rhomboid monsters on the battlefield, including numbering and naming each vehicle. Though the book does not provide a list of the names, the author does explain the logic behind the practice.

Chapter V finally delivers material that could rightly be expected in a "shop manual." "Operating the Mark IV" combines instructions from period manuals with interior photos of an extant Mk IV to illustrate a crew started, drove, steered, stopped and functioned inside the tank.

The last two chapters chronicle the Mk IV's combat history and retirement from service. The final also chapter discusses extant Mk IVs, including the incredible discovery and 1998 excavation of an intact Mk IV from the Cambrai battlefield.

Unfortunately, this book is likely to be overlooked by most of its intended audience, as a result of the publisher's ill-advised (in my opinion) decision to package this otherwise excellent book under their "Haynes shop manual" umbrella. The cover and title page of this book boldly declare, "Owners' Workshop Manual." Great book!

David Fletcher is probably the one person on the planet that can write this book with such authority. He does a very good job presenting what it would be like to operate this tank. There is a lot we don't know about these tanks but Mr. Fletcher is very honest on this and bases everything on what facts are available. Great book not only for someone interested in these early tanks but a must if you are working on a model.

Excellent Book

This book is an excellent look at the development of the first tanks in World War One, with particular reference to a restored Mark IV tank owned by the Tank Museum in the United Kingdom.

The book is filled with illustrations and large photos of the preserved Mark IV tank with associated descriptions about its development, motive power, armour, armament and what it was like to drive and work in such a vehicle.

Highly recommended.

The best recreation of Hayek's thought available

Friedrich von Hayek has had perhaps the most profound impact of any political theorist in the last half-century. John Gray's book is a superb analysis of his ideas. Where other studies can be confusing or convoluted, Gray's always maintains its ability to lucidly recreate Hayek's arguments from their intellectual roots upwards.
Understanding the intellectual foundations of Hayek's work, can be a minefield of inaccessible terms and confusing statements. Thanks to John Gray, however, these matters are clearly and intelligently explained. The result is that the reader is provided with a rich insight into how Hayek's political economy functions. More than just a critique of socialism, Hayek's thought is also a profound intellectual statement combining the epistemological insights of Hume with Kant's categorical imperative. An understanding of its philosophical basis allows a fertile gaze into the prism that is Hayek's thought. Only Gray explains these aspects of his writngs clearly.
"Hayek on Liberty" is, moreover, refreshingly objective, despite the controversy which Hayek's ideas generate. Gray seeks to explain rather than to refute or praise. The reader can therefore take the insights Gray offers in a number of directions. Although Gray clearly admires Hayek, he does not feel the need to indulge in the monotonous hero-worship to which we have become accustomed. There is much to be found here for Hayek's critics too. Especially since it is doubtful that Hayek's use of Hume does not undermine many of his more positive political statements.
Gray's work is thus an invaluable guide to one of the Twentieth Century's intellectual icons. One only has to observe the saint-like worship Hayek has received in recent months, surrounding the centenery of his birth, to appreciate that his legacy is an ongoing phenomenon of global proportions. Academic, student, and interested observer will find Gray's study immensely helpful as a platform for approaching more general disussions of Hayek's ideas, of which many fine examples now exist. Anyone attempting a detailed appreciation of Hayek should thus keep Gray beside them at all times.

Definitely worth more than a single read

The shear volume of work completed by Hayek over a publishing career that marked more than fifty years makes it quite difficult to grasp the interlocking system of ideas he advocated. Gray has done an exceptional job of synthesizing this work. He presents the philosophical roots of Hayek's thought, the unique 20th century context in which Hayek's ideas competed with others, and a magnificent critique that anyone interested in Hayek should study.
Essentially, Gray reduces Hayek's contribution to that of a critic of socialism. Hayek's assertion that socialized central planning was an "epistemological impossibility," while historically evident, provides an inadequate justification for the 19th century form of capitalism Hayek advocated. The post-communist 21st century must deal with competing capitalisms, not rigid centrally planned economies, and Gray considers Hayek inadequate on this score.
Gray believes that Hayek missed an essential aspect of free market capitalism, that is, the power of progress. Free markets demand change, even change for change's sake, and the metaphor of a "spontaneous social order" arising in some sort of social evolution is not adequate to provide support for the traditional values and institutions for which Hayek had regard. Personal autonomy will always present a danger to social cohesion. In Gray's view, the free market advocated by Hayek prefers the former to the latter.
To Gray this weakness in Hayek's thought is fatal, and I tend to agree.

Slightly disappointing

I read this primarily wanting to get some handle on Hayek's work and I feel that it did help me, but that it was a book strangely behind its time. Its discussion of computation seemed unaware of the work going on as some of the criticisms of Dreyfus et. al. were in the process of being addressed, e.g., with Phil Agre's work on Pengi and Brooks' subsumption architecture -- although, admittedly some of this work was cotemporal with the writing of the book.

Similarly, as soon as I read the game theory comments I found myself asking: "well how does 'tit for tat' fit in", but 'tit for tat' never seemed to be addressed even though the work was known long before the book was published.

I found these oversights problematic, since they seemed to constitute one of the cores of the argument. They also hit one of my frustrations: the characterization that computation requires everything to be spelled out in exact detail. This is true for some systems some times, but does not completely cover the computational space.

I would have also liked to have seen a more detailed exposition of what appeared to be an anti-statistics stance on Hayek's part-- another aspect that seemed core and which, in my mind, required more grounding.

That said, it was a interesting book, the reviews just seem more favorable than justified, but Hayek is a polarizing figure.

Well written with some hiccups, Directionless

Here's what I like about it: it's too short.
Here's what I don't like about it: it's too short.
If you're a nonprogrammer, this book will inevitably give you some hiccups. Not because the book is poorly written (indeed it is hilariously written) but because no one is able to explain a few concepts you need to know in 25 to 30 pages of text completely.

As a programmer I would've taken time to explain what events are or what events mean in the programming environment. I would have expanded on what variables are and I would've talked about different datatypes. I think overall this was a good starting point for anyone who doesn't know anything about programming or JavaScript as it pertains to acrobat. What would've helped me a great deal would have been the ability to create my own methods, how they're stored, and The best way to invoke methods in scripts. In his example: The one where you manipulate the background text and the text color, it would've been nice to know if there was a generic method where the event could have been handled by the document itself instead of the objects as you tab in and out.

As a newcomer however you do not have too many choices to pick a beginner's book in JavaScript for Acrobat and for his part this book is actually written well, is easy to follow and a great place to start from. Essentially you will reach the understanding that you would really need to get his other book for $20 from his website. So in essence this is a $22 book that you get to preview by spending $2 dollars for the privilege.

a) if you are a seasoned programmer:
What are the best way to write execute scripts, methods, how to declare variables, globals and such.. where is the best place to run your javascripts, why...book is a complete fail for seasoned programmers new to Acrobat Javascripts.

a) if you are a beginner:
What are the basics of programming. What are variables, how to declare them, etc... book is somewhat useful but extremely narrow in its scope.

This book manages not to answer either perspective particularly well. The more I thought about it, the more I feel this deserves a 2-3 stars, not the 4 starts I had originally given to the product.

As such, I give it 3 stars for new users to Acrobat. But the acrobat community remains severely starved for a good place to start their journey with Javascript...whether seasoned or fresh..

Although this was very cheap i do not like paying for a sample. Extremely little content. His sole example code is for changing the color of a text box. The author should be ashamed of himself. The whole single lesson could or should fit on one page. Don't get scammed by this "book".

Great book for getting your feet wet!

If you're looking for a good introduction to syntax, this is a wonderful book for that purpose. Tallerman's prose is clear and understandable and the examples clearly explain the concepts. The book is organized well and both indices and contents pages do their jobs well, something I've found rare in many textbooks.
The questions, however, can sometimes be quirky. The data can be minimal in the extreme and instead the question itself leads the student to the answer. This can make the questions seem just a rehash of the chapter instead of exercises that develop the student's skills. Depending on the professor, it can leave students unprepared for tests and quizzes. These quirks are rare, though, and most exercises help the student well enough.
I'd recommend this book for those learning syntax on their own or for really basic courses in syntax. This isn't really a graduate level book by itself, although with supplements or another more advanced text it is a great way to introduce students to syntax before moving on to the harder stuff later on in the semester.

Good book for students with little background in linguistics

Good book for students with little background in linguistics, besides the basic "intro to linguistics" class, and maybe even without it. I think the appeal of this book in on its use of several examples from languages around the world, and a down-to-Earth presentation of the main notions in syntactic argumentation. It is not a book that presents any theoretical framework in particular (or in general), but you can tell it assumes some basics tenets of Generative Linguistics, like innatism, independence of syntax from semantics and pragmatics, and discretely defined grammatical categories. However, those are, by and large, mainstream ideas that every students must know. Besides that, it is not theoretically "heavy", and that is a plus to me when offering a general class to inform students about the core notions and debates on a field of knowledge. Specialization can come later, when the foundations have been provided, and this books does that job just right.

More of an introduction to linguistics

It is a good introduction to linguistics, however this book doesn't necessarily focus on syntax. It explains how languages work. What it isn't is an overview of syntax from phrase structure rules, through Xbar theory, to minimalism.

Having bought the excellent Understanding Pragmatics book (in this same series) to fill in large gaps in my knowledge of that subject, I bought this book hoping to refresh my knowledge of Xbar and especially subsequent movements in syntax.
