When the distressed Mrs. Silver tells her neighbor that she will be his "slave for life" if he can find a way to make Alfie grow, the determined Mr. Hoppy devises an elaborate scheme to make her think the tortoise is growing. (Since tortoises, according to Mr. Hoppy, are backward creatures that "can only understand words that are written backwards," his exhortation to the pet begins "Esio Trot"--which is "tortoise" reversed.) It is a happy Hoppy who gets all the credit--and Mrs. Silver's hand. Adults and older children will appreciate Dahl's superior storytelling skills, and will chuckle at Blake's animated, cartoony drawings. Well, in a word . . . yes--it can. And to those who still disbelieve, it's a sweetly insouciant love story at that. For years, old Mr. Hoppy has loved his neighbor, Mrs. Silver, a widow who, alas, only has eyes for her pet tortoise, Alfie. The details of how her wish that Alfie would grow a little faster inspires Mr. Hoppy to win the widow's heart will not be divulged here (but it has something to do with the fact that "Esio Trot" is "tortoise" spelled backward). I read Esio Trot by Roald Dahl.I tought it was the best book I ever read. Mr.Hoppy wanted to marry Mrs. Silver. Mrs. Silver did not know that Mr. Hoppy wanted to marry her. The book is about his plan to get Mrs.Silver to fall in love with him. I liked when Tortoise number 8 got stuck in his house. I also like when Mr. Hoppy wrote in tortoise language. That was funny. My favorite part was when Mr. Hoppy had 140 tortoises!

You're done in half an hour

It shows how far a man will go

to prove he has some power

To win the love of Mrs. S.

He pulls a clever ruse

If he can make her tortoise grow

He knows she won't refuse

Tortoises with matching shells

He plays his clever game

It takes an awful lot of work

To win his dizzy dame

ESIO TROT (spelled backwards please)

Gets larger as he'd said

And when he even shrinks it down

He gets inside her head

The moral of this leery tale's

Hi I'm Elyssa I'm in 2nd grade. I'm 7 years old. I just finished reading Esio Trot .It is about a man named Mr.Hoppy. Who loves a woman named Ms.Silver.Ms.Silver has a pet tortoise that she wants to grow so Mr.Hoppy gives her a piece of paper that says some weird words.I like this book because it is funny. I think the funniest part of this book is when Mr.Hoppy gives Ms.Silver the piece of paper and Ms.Silver says there are an awful lot of poos in there aren't there? I love Roald Dahl books. My favorite Roald Dahl book is Matilda. Matilda is a little girl who can read all the books in her house by the age of 3.I recommend both Matilda and Esio Trot for ages 7 and up. I wish I could tell you the ending .But you'll have to read the book to find out.

Camp Princess is in session again, and Princesses Alicia, Gundersnap, and Kristen have returned to the South Turret, with the addition of tiny Princess Myrella. This session it's Gundersnap's turn to be in the spotlight, in the midst of rumors of a dance with real Princes and a unicorn round-up! Gundersnap has much greater concerns than Princes and unicorns, though.

First, there's Gortle, a dwarf from Gundersnap's castle, who has come to keep Gundersnap company. In other kingdoms, dwarves are used as entertainment and are commanded to do tricks that Gundersnap considers rude and demeaning. To her, Gortle is a friend, and she is determined that he will be treated with respect. This is hardly a problem in the South Turret, but the rest of Camp Princess is a different story.

Additionally, Gortle brings with him the news that Gundersnap's Queen mother has taken her own, personal, favorite horse into battle! Aside from being a dear friend, Menschmik, the pony, is hardly battle ready. How dare her mother take her pony!

Who could even think about Princes and unicorns at a time like this? Suddenly, it's starting to look like things are more connected than they appear. Gundersnap may have to hope that the rumors are not only true, but that both Princes and unicorns are more dependable than she expects.

Not as lighthearted as the first story in the series, Camp Princess 1: Born to Rule (Camp Princess), and almost more lovable because of it, the latest romp through Camp Princess is as sweet as the last. With another part of the tapestry complete, it appears that Princess Kristen is up next.

Fantastic, in-depth analysis of DNA repair

As a grad student I've found this book immensely helpful. It takes you from the basic mechanisms of DNA replication into a detailed analysis of repair and exchange.

It's a must-have for any student interested in repair and recombination. The repair chapter in Mol Bio of the Gene is nice, but this is way more useful.

Grade 7-10–In the sequel to Faerie Wars (Bloomsbury, 2003), trouble stirs again in the Faerie Realm. The Emperor is dead, and Prince Pyrgus has doubts about whether he is ready to rule. Machinations by evil Lord Hairstreak threaten to take that decision away; the Emperor's body disappears while lying in state and reappears as an animated zombie who disinherits Pyrgus in favor of his half brother, Comma. Pyrgus, his sister Princess Blue, Henry (a human teenager who has access to the Faerie Realm), and Mr. Fogarty (another human and Pyrgus's advisor) team up with the feral Forest Faerie, who are led by Nymph, another strong princess who comes across remarkably like Blue. As in the first volume, pacing and inventiveness offer a rollercoaster ride; unfortunately, characterization and plot are often thin. The subplot concerning Henry and his family problems in his (our) world is dropped completely, and he does little but feel useless and pine after Princess Blue. Blue is still a strong female character, but events are rarely shown through her eyes, making it difficult for readers to identify with her. Subplots that involve a wangaramas wyrm (a telekinetic parasite intent upon revolution) and Brimstone (a demonologist) and his continued dealings with Hael (Hell) are by far the most entertaining portions of the novel, but don't stand alone. Once again, Henry Atherton finds himself transported back to the Faerie realm, where he helps Pyrgus and his sister, Holly Blue, defeat Hairstreak and his minions. Good but not great

The 2nd book of Faerie Wars was good. It furthered the series and answered some questions I had from book 1. It dragged in spots but (like many books) picked up toward the end. Most of the time it was a fast read. I am an adult and if I were younger like the child I was reading and discussing this with, my view would have been different. She loved this book. She was especially interested in the relationships that developed. There were more questions that came up but isn't that why we have another book? I am sure all the questions will be answered by the end of the series.

More adventure

This is the 2nd book of the series Faerie Wars. I actually liked this one better than the first. This book takes place mostly in the Faerie World. There we meet up with characters from the first book like Pyrgus, Henry, Mr. Fogarty, Blue, Hairstreak, Brimstone, etc. It picks up a couple weeks after the last one left off. Pyrgus is getting ready to become Emperor but he doesn't really want to. All of the sudden he finds out that he doesn't have to because his deceased father is back. From there it justs rolls with adventure for everyone.
I personally didn't have a problem with the abrupt ending. I know sequels sometimes do that and looking for to book 3 - Ruler of the Realm to clear things up.

Watch what you pay

This book, in it various revisions, is one of the most important works on the internal combustion engine written over the +100 years the engine type has been with us. It is excellently written and very accessible, and cannot be recommended enough.

A suggestion: Like me you may want to own an original, however the Ricardo engineering company (set up by the author) is retailing a re-print of the 5th edition for £35 on line. Please look at [...]->what we do->Information services->estore for details. The cover of the re-print looks identical to that shown on this Amazon page. The re-print is excellent (I bought one) and includes the large fold-out engine cross-section drawings so beloved of engineers.

Required reading for all piston-engine enthusiasts.

The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine by Sir Harry R. Ricardo, LL.D., F. R. S.
Sir Harry Ricardo was one of the most influential piston-engine researchers in Great Britain, and probably the world. His efforts resulted in the very advanced engines which powered Britain's aircraft during WW II, and have influenced engine design ever since. This book lucidly chronicles the fascinating highlights of Ricardo's achievements, and is utterly indespensible for anyone interested in appreciating the engineering fundamentals of piston-engine design and development.
Ricardo's early efforts in characterizing the detonation properties of fuels have given us our present-day octane ratings, and their measurement. His later research and development work, summarized in this book, resulted in engine designs considered to represent the most advanced aircraft engines made. He had even more ideas to try, but the rise of turbine engines put an end to the development of high-output piston engines for aircraft.
That this richly informative and historical book is out of print is highly regrettable. It is most definitely worth attempting to locate used, and will provide a wealth of insight and historical perspective. Highly recommended.

Great Read!

I bought this book for a class. I assumed it would be another "sterile" textbook. I have been really nicely surprised. The book is easily read and is full of applicable material to anyone in business. I highly recommend this book. But I won't be selling mine at the end of the semester.
