Death Gets a Boyfriend - 3.5 stars

Death has been reaping souls for thousands of years. It’s the only thing he’s ever known and while it might be lonely, he’s never not been able to do his job. That is until one of the names on his list is a soul he can’t seem to make himself take. Immediately enamored with Tommy, Death’s intrigue means Tommy doesn’t die when he’s supposed to and soon, Death’s fascination with the human turns into something he never thought he’d have – love. But when the time comes, Death has to make a decision – save the man he loves… or save billions of souls.

This was such a sweet story! I loved that it deals with Death, also know as the Grim Reaper. Except, this Grim Reaper is far from the scary man with the scythe. Instead, he’s a funny, geeky guy who just so happens to have the ability to end your suffering and take your soul. He’s a quirky being with a love of novelty t-shirts and maybe a little depressed at times. Tommy, though, brightens Death’s life to the point that he finally has a reason to live. I loved that Tommy and Death had such good chemistry and that Tommy didn’t really freak out when he learned that he’s the only one who could see Death.

While I enjoyed this one I had a few issues with it. Mostly, I found Death’s tendency to go off topic a little distracting. Sure, he was funny and definitely amusing in the way he would go from one topic to another without any real connection between the two topics but after the first time or two, it grew just a bit tiresome. Beyond that, I felt like the story was a little shallow, not very deep or anything.

In the end, this was a very entertaining read where Death is nothing like the Grim Reaper we all know and never want to meet. Instead, Death is kind, funny and sweet and finally gets his own man. If you’re looking for something cute, sweet and with a few laughs, definitely give this one a go!

This is a love story with a twist, one of the protagonists is ‘Death’. I thought with the title’s premise this story would be silly, but it wasn’t. The relationship between Tommy and Death is sweetly believable and some parts even made you realise that death was, in some circumstance, not the worst thing that could happen. Death is adorable and wears comic T-Shirts, jeans and red plain lens glasses because he’s too pale. As no one can see him it doesn’t matter what he wears does it…until someone sees him.

I felt quite sorry for Death he doesn’t really like his job; he doesn’t understand why God and the Weather Department cause so much havoc and misery. Imagine being around for 200,000 years and nobody on Earth has ever seen you. He doesn’t mix with immortals and he’s very lonely. He has a nice white condo and doesn’t age or get ill, but he doesn’t get a lot of down time either.

Tommy is the only one who has ever seen him and can talk to him and their relationship is lovely. Tommy doesn’t have much of a social life and is looking for love too and then he meets ‘Death’ literally and metaphorically. One particular scene resonated with me and was so full of joy;

…it was easily the best night of my life. Not that I’d much competition, what with the mass killings every night. But this was special. I can’t even describe how amazing it felt to just walk beside him and know he was there.

In this scene they are just walking and talking in Central Park…and it was a true representation of romance. There is sex in the story but it fits in and is not gratuitous. There are problems of course, what does one call Death in the throes or orgasm?

The author does introduce some of the big questions, but wisely never attempts to answer them, rather leaves them for the reader to ponder. I love her portrayal of the divine being in this story, ‘God’ is not an easy characterisation for an author to attempt, but Sophie Bonaste manages a very intriguing interpretation, which I loved. Can a relationship with death end well? You’ll have to read this story to find out.
