The Secrets Between Us, by Louise Douglas

A Richard and Judy recommendation for the 2012 Summer Book Club, this is a brilliant Gothic novel in the vein of Daphne du Maurier.

A chance encounter: When Sarah meets dark, brooding Alex, she grasps his offer of a new life miles away from her own. They've both recently escaped broken relationships, and need to start again. Why not do it together?

A perfect life: But when Sarah gets to the tiny village of Burrington Stoke, something doesn't add up. Alex's beautiful wife Genevieve was charming, talented, and adored by all who knew her. And apparently, she and Alex had a successful marriage complete with a gorgeous son, Jamie. Why would Genevieve walk out on her perfect life? And why has no one heard from her since she did so?

A web of lies: Genevieve's family and all her friends think that Alex knows more about her disappearance than he's letting on. But Sarah's fallen in love with him and just knows he couldn't have anything to hide. Or could he?

This is the first book I have read from Louise Douglas but after having read this book, I know I'll read the previous and next ones as well. This book is over 450 pages but worth every single page. A real page-turner that thrills you till the last page.
The lead character is Sarah. After the stillbirth of her son which also meant the end of her relationship with her boyfriend, Sarah goes on holiday to Sicily with her sister May and husband Neil. There she meets Alexander and his young son Jamie. His mother is not there with them and Sarah hears bits and pieces of the story about the missing mother Genevieve. In Sicily, Alex asks Sarah to move in at their place and become Jamie's nanny. But when Sarah does, she finds out more about Genevieve and her sudden and strange disappearance.

Douglas is a master in building up the tension throughout the book! She has complete control over the characters and the story.
Sarah is a very kind person who has been in an emotional turmoil throughout the story but she's a kind of naive deciding to move in with someone she doesn't know at all.
Alexander is the main male within the book. You keep on doubting whether he's a good man or not, and until the end, you can't say for definite whether he had done a terrible thing to Genevieve or not.
Jamie, the young child of Alexander who is struggling with the disappearance of his mummy, is a lovely kid although I find his language a bit rude and wise for his age.
The book has been written in the first person narrative, and I think this worked perfectly for the book. It allows the reader to get into the mind of Sarah and therefore see the story from her point of view, and her uncertainty about everything. The town and surroundings are well described.

Throughout the book I kept on wondering why Sarah stayed with Alexander despite her suspicions while any other person would probably have run away for good.
I couldn't put this book down as I was desperate to find out how things were going to end for Sarah and Alexander, and whether I would find out what happened to Genevieve.

The end was a complete surprise. I had not expected that person to be involved in the missing of Genevieve. That question keeps the central mystery throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an incredible loving and mysterious novel which is not a usual crime story.

A thoroughly absorbing read
By Lisa Hardy
"I'm part of the Transworld Book Group & this book was provided courtesy of Transworld Publishers" I have not been paid for my review and the opinion and review is entirely my own.

I have to be honest, I had never heard of Louise Douglas before, but the synopsis on this book really intrigued me.

It is about Alex and Sarah. They meet in Sicily where Sarah is on holiday with her Sister and Brother in Law. She has gone to escape a broken relationship and a recent loss. She meets Alex there with his son Jamie and befriends Jamie whilst spending time by the hotel pool. She discovers that Alex is a single parent as his wife Genevieve walked out on him.

After their time in Sicily and after striking up a good friendship, Sarah agrees to go back to Burrington Stoke with Alex and become his housekeeper. Her family are not really happy with the situation but Sarah needs a new start. When she gets back to the village she realises that there are lots of rumours about why Alex's wife Genevieve left, with Genevieve's family convinced that Alex is hiding something. They seemed to have everything. A wonderful house, money and a successful marriage so why would she leave. Sarah experiences some hostility from the villagers, as rumours fly.

I found this book really intriguing and couldn't put it down. I loved the way the characters were written, and felt they were very descriptive and the writing brought them to life. The plot lines were excellent and kept you guessing page and page, right until the very end. The way the author described the emotions of all the characters added to the intrigue of the book. Just when you think you know which way the story is going to go, it goes in another direction. It really was a great read and I hightly recommend it. I will certainly be looking up more books by Louise Douglas. Thorougly absorbing.

A Haunting Love Story
By Lougrahamii
The Secrets Between Us is the 3rd novel written by Louise Douglas.

Whilst trying to move on from her own life Sarah meets Alexander when on holiday in Sicily. It was a chance encounter, both searching for answers to their broken relationships. Alexander offers Sarah a fresh start back in England looking after his son Jamie.

Arriving in Burrington Stokes, there is a lot of hostility toward Sarah. Everyone loved Alex's wife, Genevieve. She was perfect in every way with family around the corner that adored her. Gen was a mother, a Wife and her love of horses, why did she walk out from it all, leave it all behind and not contact anyone?

Does Alex know more than he is letting on about Genevieve leaving? His family and friends certainly think so. Can Sarah truly trust the man she has fallen in love with?

This was my first book I've read written by Louise Douglas and I hadn't done any research of her previous books so I had no expectations. The book is a love story but it is much deeper than that. It's a story that will have your pulse racing as the story unfolds with the haunting twists and turns. There is comparission of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca to it, but it stands out on its own and is extremely well written. You feel their struggles and pain and you will things to turn out for the best as you turn each page. It says on the back of the book that it is a "page turner that will keep you gripped to the very last chapter" and that is certainly true. An excellent suspense and a wonderful book.

This was the second book I have read as part of the Transworld Book Group Challenge.
