Green Lantern Corps vs Mongul

This is a great story following the events of the Sinestro Corps War. The GL Corps are chasing the Yellow rings orphaned from the dead Sinestro corps members. One finds it's way to Mongul, and fun and violence occurs!!

Must own for fans.

The idea of the Green Lantern Corps is one of the genuinely genius concepts in the DC or any comics universe. Superficially similar in nature to the Jedi Knights of Star Wars, the Green Lantern Corps are essentially space police, and their tales chronicle the exploits of sentient representatives from various solar systems around the galaxy, given immensely powerful rings that are powered by will. Lanterns know no fear, or are at least able to overcome it.

This volume collects issues 19&20, and then 23-26 of the regular ongoing Green Lantern Corps (GLC) series, and is also the first full volume featuring the work of writer Peter Tomasi, previously an editor at DC. Generally, it's a mixed bag, both in the writing and the art department, because both are a bit uneven, and the inconsistency hurts a little. Nevertheless, it is an entertaining read. However, I wouldn't recommend it for non GLC fans or beginners who are intrigued by the concept of the Green Lanterns and are looking for a strong introductory volume. For those people, I would recommend previous volumes Recharge, or A Dark Side of Green, the latter of which continues to be the high water mark of storytelling for the collected volumes of GLC, thus far.

The premise of the story is that the ruthless and sadistic alien Mongul has come into possession of a Sinestro Corps ring, a ring analogous to the Green Lantern's ring but only yellow, and powered not by will but fear. At the same time, the GLC is ordered by the Guardians to track down and imprison every last remaining Sinestro Corps member they can find, or at least, to capture every ring without a carrier. This sets up a confrontation between a small team of lanterns, most of whom are the regular cast of GLC, and Mongul, a powerful foe who occasionally challenges Superman and whose lust for power is unrelenting.

As stories go, the execution by writer Tomasi tries hard to live up to the promised excitement inherent in the premise of the story, and for the most part, he succeeds. However, the writing is uneven in parts. Although the first two chapters are included here, the first is not strictly necessary and is mostly filler, focused on the permanent move to OA by lanterns Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner. Curiously, the second chapter announces that it is the first part of Ring Quest, though that too is mostly set up, split between the mundanity of both lanterns settling in to Oa and Mongul's scheming. It's an odd two issues that don't quite work either as single stories or that well together. Among other things, one of the glaring problems with the first chapter is that it is less a story than a "let's catch up with what each lantern's doing" checklist, which I find annoying, and had I been a buyer of the monthly comic, would have caused me to ask for my money back. (For the price of modern comics, I want an actual story where something actually happens in the 22 pages of "story.")

The remaining four chapters go directly to the lanterns' quest to find the Sinestro corps members or rings, and are far more engaging than the previous two. (For non readers of the regular series, it is also a little disconcerting that issues number 21&22 are mysteriously excluded from this collection, though one presumes that it's because they aren't directly relevant; the only problem with that being that "Ring Quest part 1" strangely takes place two issues before "Ring Quest part 2...") Once we get into the confrontation though, chapters move along briskly, Tomasi is able to build a real sense of drama and suspense with the capture of lanterns Arisia and Sodam (I know!) Yat, among other things, and the likeability of the characters as individuals and as a group, pulls you in as a reader. There are some genuinely harrowing parts, such as where the two captured lanterns get swallowed and digested, and where the other corps members are compelled to fly through collected debris in space of millions of dead bodies and body parts. A little grizzly, to be sure, but the horror aspects of this book have been one of it's mainstays since it launched.

There are some weaknesses though. Tomasi's dialog is a little melodramatic in places, even for comic books, and Mercy's narration about her origins is just very occasionally cringe-worthy, possibly because she is a sentient, telepathic, plant... (I know, even for a series featuring aliens that look like talking lizards, it was a bit much; a sentient plant, maybe, but telepathic too? Love that fertilizer! And it gets better, the plant has other powers and abilities far beyond those of physics... and gravity!) Similarly, Tomasi makes Mongul here a bit of a bombastic talker in parts, which oddly undermines the menace the character should represent, and is something other writers have been wise to avoid. The banter between Mongul and his acolyte is also silly, and a little misjudged. To my mind, Mongul wouldn't spend time talking to threaten you. Instead of wasting energy to speak words designed to scare, he'd try to scratch out your eyes and break open your skull to dine on your brains. Tomasi makes him occasionally an, "I shall this, and I shall that, and you shall obey, or I shall threaten you to death..." type. It doesn't work. Thankfully though, it's infrequent enough to only be slightly annoying. Thankfully, Tomasi is smart enough to exploit one of the real strengths of GLC, which is that it's large cast means that characters really do face peril. In GLC, characters you love really can get killed, and Tomasi uses that fact to bring a poignant end to his tale.

This volume definitely does not showcase Patrick Gleason at his best. His art in these stories is inconsistent and obviously rushed in places, and the multiplicity of inkers only makes that worse. Gleason also continues to suffer from stuffing his panels with way too much detail and to rely too heavily on strong blacks, that end up confusing the reader (something that both hurts and helps him in the previously mentioned scene of flying through suspended planetary rings of dead bodies. Few other pencillers could make it look so genuinely horrific/morbid, and yet in some places, a lot of it gets lost completely). In more panels than are acceptable for a penciller of a monthly series, I just can't make out what's going on. Gleason improves his storytelling here only marginally from previous volumes, where his story flow and panel size selection were hit and miss. Gleason's at his best when he ignores his quirky instincts and plays it straight instead of cartoony, and his art in this volume swings between both extremes, aided and abetted by whichever mad inker is on him for that page. Gleason is obviously talented, but hasn't decided whether he wants to be a cartoonist or a penciller. That said, he pencils all six issues in this volume, and his work ethic is impressive, and it needs to be born in mind that the pressures of producing a monthly title will test even the most committed pencillers. The art is not Gleason at his best, but showcases his occasional flashes of brilliance and generally serves the story well.

Overall though, this definitely a volume worth owning for GLC and Green Lantern fans. It's an interesting, exciting tale, plants seeds for some future stories even as it ties up some ends from the previous excellent Sinestro Corps War epic, and even for it's weaknesses, ends up being a solid addition to a very satisfying library of modern Green Lantern tales. I highly recommend it for people who are already fans of the GL concept, and are looking for a good read. Amazon sent me a copy with two pages missing, but I gave it three stars nonetheless.

Sci-Fi story lacking in science

Overall, this is a decent book. It starts out excitingly as many of the notable Green Lanterns go on an off-world mission to track down Sinestro Corps rings that have gone missing. The Green Lanterns end up fighting Mongol, an evil Siamese twin, and a sentient Plant-planet. Sounds cool, and it mostly is, but it's got some big flaws, many of which have already been discussed in other reviews.
After each issue, the quality of the story telling degrades. For me, much of this has to do with simple errors in writing. In one case, the planet Sedas is said to be in Space Sector 3550, while later it is in the Vega System of Sector 2020 (These numbers may not be exact, as I'm writing this on memory) Are we to believe that a planet can move this far across the universe in such a short amount of time?
Secondly, there are several scientific misrepresentations that are merely annoying, but that tend to pop up frequently in this title. In one instance, Lantern Iolande refers to the sentient plant as "merely fauna." Of course, fauana refers to animal life, while flora refers to plants. In another case, Mercy (The sentient plant) refers to her ability to feel the fear and pain of beings across the universe. She states something like "I can feel the emotions of others from hundreds of thousands of miles away." While this is indeed a magnificent ability on her part, it's important to remember that the moon is over 200,000 miles away from Earth. Had the writer really thought about this quote, he would have corrected it to say "hundreds of billions" to achieve the universal scope of this being's powers. These are minor mistakes, but to me it suggests that the writing is either rushed or simply uninformed. The story also feels weak, especially toward the end. I won't go into detail, but I'll just say that what should be a big emotional moment feels pretty insignificant.
Finally, the art just isn't that great either. Gleason's ink heavy art can be impressive at times, but can also make characters look awkward or distorted. In this collection, there are enough cases of this to really affect the flow of the book.
For true Green Lantern fans, this should be read. For those trying to catch up in time for Blackest Night, just skip this one and read a synopsis somewhere. The only thing that really happens is that Mongol appears to be in a place of greater importance, and the "Violet Lanterns" are set up to play an important role in the very near future.

Well-Researched Examination of an Original Subject

Do you have any idea of what the live television footage of those plays were like? You might be able to conjure up some vague recollections of what Tyree's catch looked like, but in general I'm guessing this was a pretty tough task. You are likely far more familiar to NFL Films' footage of such events, and the company has been documenting and canonizing professional football games since tiny Blair Motion Pictures won the rights to the 1962 NFL championship game. Travis Vogan's new book Keepers of the Flame documents the history of NFL Films and analyzes the evolution of sports media. Written by an academic and published by the University of Illinois Press, the book is appealing to football fans both inside and outside the ivory tower thanks to Vogan's extensive research and original subject matter.

The first aspect worth mentioning about Keepers of the Flame is that it takes a more scholarly tone than the average football book (for what that's worth). Vogan is an assistant professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Iowa and his book is clearly intended to contribute to the academic discourse of football, sports media, and the business of sport. It has the somewhat detached emotional tone common to scholarly books and cites some deep thoughts by sociologists and cultural critics about the documentary form and role of media. That being said, this isn't a treatise on monetary economics or something. I would have definitely tried to take a class with Vogan had I attended Iowa and by that same logic I decided to pick up Keepers: I think the fundamental subject matter is fascinating and I want to learn more about it. So don't let the nature of the book dissuade you from reading it if you share my interest in the subject matter.

Vogan starts out with an exceptional and extensively-researched section on the history of the Sabols and NFL Films. Steve Sabol has been featured in the "A Football Life" series on NFL Network and the history of NFL Films has been covered in books such as America's Game by Michael McCambridge but Vogan's treatment is by far the most comprehensive and interesting. The Sabols were a pretty eccentric bunch, as Keepers outlines anecdotes such as Steve Sabol's quixotic Heisman campaign has a backup fullback at Colorado College that included local newspaper ads, postcards, t-shirts, and buttons and managed to fool the (presumably incredibly inattentive) local sportswriters to name him to the All Rocky Mountain Conference Team. Outside of these factoids, Vogan also presents the best history of how humble Blair Pictures managed to eventually become the media behemoth that is NFL Films. The history chapter reads like an excellent longform magazine article and stands well by itself.

The rest of the book examines topics such as the aesthetics of NFL Films' productions and the company's role in elevating the league and its players to the greatest heights of importance. The Sabols were meticulous auteurs (with quite a bit of cultural literacy and included some highbrow references to works such as Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon in their movies) and went great to great lengths to present works of artistic merit. Vogan outlines signature elements such as the "tight on the spiral" aerial footage of the prolate spheriod and microphoning of players and coaches, a first among sports media entities. One benefit of reading academic authors is that they generally leave no stones unturned in their research, and Vogan is no different. He had access to Steve Sabol and was even granted the opportunity to visit NFL Films as often as he wanted. He also was able to sit down with producers, archivists, and administrators at NFL Films and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This allows for some great original insights and trivia, such as how NFL Films' reliance on 16mm color film has made them Eastman Kodak's largest current client and the intricacies of the complex SABER system used to classify game footage which includes subcategories such as "Sweat," "Praying," and "Torn Uniforms."

Vogan spends a substantial share of the book writing on NFL Films' role as acting as a historian and propaganda arm for the league. Their productions allow the game to achieve a higher level of significance compared to other sports and seem more consequential in general. He also analyzes major films such as "Big Game America" for their portrayal of the sport and its athletes and how they were influenced by the current culture. People definitely took NFL Films' highlight films seriously, and in the 1970s the Pennsylvania State Legislature even passed a resolution censuring Monday Night Football because the NFL Films highlights that ran during halftime were apparently Steelers-deficient. Vogan concludes with a look at NFL Films today and how it is adapting to a shifting media market and trying to avoid obsolescence by aiming for a niche role and seeking out older audiences.

In Sum
I am not an academic and I didn't read Keepers of the Flame to cite it in a college essay or thesis or something. I simply picked it up because to my knowledge NFL Films hadn't yet received a full book treatment and it seemed like it would be an interesting read. Travis Vogan ultimately delivers a very well-researched and often illuminating look at an NFL cultural institution. Understand that while this book is academic in tone and quotes people like Pierre Bourdieu, it is still a great read for anyone interested in NFL Films and the history of sports media.

Excellent institutional history of NFL Films

This is an excellent institutional history of NFL Films that is based on extensive archival research and interviews. While Vogan focuses a great deal of attention on NFL Films as an organization and media producer, he also engages significantly with the content of the films and cultural contexts in which they are made and watched. Unlike many academic texts, the writing is clear and not heavily reliant on discipine-specific jargon - you don't have to be a professor or an expert on sports in order to enjoy it. With that being said, I highly recommended the book for scholars who do work on sport, film, television and/or popular culture.

Author seems to enjoy saying the same things over and over

Interesting, but a little "over the top" in it's explanation of NFL Film's purpose. Way too scholarly for the average reader.Some sentences run on so long that you lose the idea author is trying to make. I didn't need to be told that they glorify the NFL and it's players. Author seems to enjoy saying the same things over and over, but uses almost mind numbing routes getting there. I knew the purpose and techniques of NFL Films just by having a brain. What I really wanted to read was the technical aspects of how they do what they do and what brought these into being...When I finished the book, I felt as though the author had tried to destroy the image of NFL Films and it's future while at the same time trying to cover his butt by saying how much he respected the Sabols and their product.

I had lost my hardback copy of this book some years ago and always wished I had it back. But I decided to cheap-out and go with this re-print. Too bad. The original book is absolutely beautiful, and this one is terrible looking. It IS, not looks like, IS a bad photocopy. Get a better version.

I have bought this title for use as a reference book, as I am undertaking honey bee studies. So far I have found it to be very informative and there is certainly no doubt the the Author certainly knew his subject intimately. A very worthwhile purchase, this book is going to be well read.

Amazing Illustrations

For me, the primary draw to "Anatomy of the Honey Bee" is the illustrations. Carefully handdrawn honey bee stingers may not be your cup of tea, but I find them fascinating to look at. H.R. Giger has nothing on this stuff. The very idea that there are people in the world that are so infinitely (I dare not say "intimately") familiar with these insects is mindboggling.
The text is interesting as well, but I've never read it straight through. I find it
more fruitful to think of the text as extended captions to the amazing illustrations.

A Book Every Parent and Church Member Must Read

When does one become an adult? Go to the movie theater and they’ll tell you 12 if you’re paying for a ticket, but 17 if you want to see an NC17 movie. The DMV says 16. You’re able to join the military, buy cigarettes and vote at 18 but the Liquor Control Board says you’re not an adult until you’re 21. It’s no wonder people are confused. When does one become an adult?

Author Chuck Stecker says we become an adult when we are physically able to reproduce (13) and he makes a compelling argument. Chuck wrote Men of Honor Women of Virtue. Now I know what you might be thinking. “That’s crazy. No way is a 13 year old is an adult.” He goes to great length to delineate between adulthood and maturity and sets forth a path for parents and churches to help it’s young adults to grow in depth and maturity. I believe his concept of rites of passages for our young people could be a vital part of stemming the tide of people leaving high school and the church simultaneously. By welcoming our youth into adulthood and fostering intergenerational ministry and relationships in our congregations, we establish connections for our young people that will last beyond the last day of youth group.

Think about our mission to train up our children in the way that they should go, bringing them up to love serve and follow the Lord. I think Chuck Stecker makes some fantastic points that the church needs to embrace.

Folks we are losing a generation. It’s estimated that as few as three percent of this generation will remain in the faith as they grow up. Consider the ramifications of a world where 97 percent of the population does not follow Jesus Christ (not to mention the eternal destiny). We need to act now to turn this tide. This book is a must read because it offers great solutions. I wish I had this book when my sons were children, because while I believe them to be good men, it would have made me a much better father.

When this is done, just as the breath is natural for the physical body, the mantra becomes natural and when this continues during deep sleep, your Guru or God might come and give vision, you might hear shlokas, grasp things easily, receive instructions and mantras if necessary.

The mind should not be just an empty camp follower of an aggressive element of passion.

The mantra bursts the mind into its million pieces and what 'is' remains. Great power is released within yourself, with the atoms of the body but this must be used not for selfish gratification or for selfish ends but in the larger interest of society and one should be as a constant source of support, joy and sustenance to others.

Meditation is to go from Mano Laya (mental absorption in a Divine idea or concept) to Mano Nasha (negation of sense of difference with that idea) to Samadhi (total unity). And Samadhi or God Realisation is the birthright of every human.

Reflection is hundred times superior to hearing and meditation is one hundred thousand times superior to reflection but Nirvikalpa Samadhi is infinite in its results, where the Truth of the Brahman is clearly and definitely realised.

Guruji said, "Whatever you eat, first offer it to God and then eat." All present did that and started to eat. Sunil said, "The Manu Smriti says, 'Whatever a Brahmin may or may not do, only the silent repetition of the name of God governs His liberation.' Guruji said, "Correct, but here and everywhere else in the Gita, etc. you should remember that 'Brahmin' does not mean the caste as we know it today but, the class of people, those who are born from the head of God, i.e. having the thinking capability, they are the intellectuals.

very down to earth narration

I like the simplicity of the book yet the message has been conveyed very sharply and subtly. truly appreciate the writer's experiences with his guruji; there is a great deal to learn from that.
Its nice to see that the vedic style of preaching is still alive. This book brings forth the very same magnitude of vedic preaching and also exposes the subtle yet strong bonds / relationship between a guru and a disciple or student. nice job!

Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger,took a risk with his second book by making Death an omniscient narrator—and it largely paid off. Originally published in Australia and marketed for ages 12 and up, The Book Thief will appeal both to sophisticated teens and adults with its engaging characters and heartbreaking story. The Philadelphia Inquirer compared the book's power to that of a graphic novel, with its "bold blocks of action." If Zusak's postmodern insertions (Death's commentary, for example) didn't please everyone, the only serious criticism came from Janet Maslin, who faulted the book's "Vonnegut whimsy" and Lemony Snicket-like manipulation. Yet even she admitted that The Book Thief "will be widely read and admired because it tells a story in which books become treasures." And, as we all know, "there's no arguing with a sentiment like that."

Death focuses on a young orphan, Liesl; her loving foster parents; the Jewish fugitive they are hiding; and a wild but gentle teen neighbor, Rudy, who defies the Hitler Youth and convinces Liesl to steal for fun. After Liesl learns to read, she steals books from everywhere. When she reads a book in the bomb shelter, even a Nazi woman is enthralled. Then the book thief writes her own story. There's too much commentary at the outset, and too much switching from past to present time, but as in Zusak's enthralling I Am the Messenger (2004), the astonishing characters, drawn without sentimentality, will grab readers. More than the overt message about the power of words, it's Liesl's confrontation with horrifying cruelty and her discovery of kindness in unexpected places that tell the heartbreaking truth. Great Cause of Book Thieves Globally.

I am, of course, premature in writing this review, since I am only about 100 pages into my first reading of the paperback text. But already there is no question in my mind that the book deserves all the accolades it has already received since its first publication some years ago. My only excuse -- if it is that -- is that I just came to the book very recently (and, I'd like to say for the record, atone initiated a book discussion forum by the title of "The Book Thieves" [ahem..] before going to the Amazon entry for *The Book Thief* and finding out I'd been beaten to the punch a considerable time ago, oh well.) Among other things -- but i'm sure this has already also been noted ahead of me) -- there is a sardonic Death in charge throughout Ingmar Bregman's game-changing movie, "The Seventh Seal," one helluvah way to be introduced to Chaucer's "Knights' Tale" as a wet-behind-the-ears, just-off-the-boat Harvard junior English major, Fall of 1960. Brrrr.

The writing here is superb, the pace is spell-binding, and the cliff-hanging suspense at the ends of chapters is, well, suspenseful -- sorry -- and I know I'm far behind the rest of you. I *think* we're going to abandon our own free-standing discussion forum, and I'll send a note to that effect to my co-conspirator in that baby beginning. Thank you, Amazon, for putting all these resources at the tip of one's computer. The Book Thief Mainly Just Stole My Reading Time

Just finished reviewing this and suddenly my review disappeared! Briefly, this is a book that was not as good as the movie. I was influenced too, by the fact that I had just finished Anthony Doerr's "All The Light we Cannot See" a true classic covering the same historical period of WW2.
I had also not realized that it was written for "Young Readers" which may have accounted for its writing style. a style that I found simplistic and un subtle. There were lovely parts to be sure, but all in all I found the format of using Death as a narrator, irritating and at times trite.

Loved it!

I made a deal with myself to try and read a few of the books on my TBR pile each month on top of my other book commitments. The Book Thief has been on the top of that pile for quite a while. I know, I know! Try not to judge...I'm quite embarrassed that it has taken this long for me to tackle it. I honestly don't have any excuses. I love historical fiction and more importantly books surrounding World War I and World War II. My Mother, Sister and Daughter have all read it as well as numerous of my friends. It was time for me to read it.

I knew I was in trouble after just a few pages. Not only did the story take place in WWII Germany but it was narrated by death. It did not have the makings of a happily ever after. First off, I wasn't sure how an entire book (particularly one that is 576 pages long) could be narrated by death without being completely depressing. I have to say though, that it worked beautifully. Of course there was a lot of depressing content, it was WWII after all, but at the same time there was a lot of beauty within the pages. Not only was the narration of the story unique but so was the writing and together it made for one of the best books that I have read in quite some time. The descriptors in this book were so vivid that I felt like I could reach out and touch them. It was pure 100% talent at its finest.

I won't go into detail about the plot because this book has been reviewed millions of times. I will say, however, that the synopsis did not do it justice. It was far bigger and greater than how it was described. Some of the best characters were also found within the pages of this book that I adored. Leisel Meminger was an amazing young girl with a love for books. How could I not love her and the people she loved like Max, Rudy and Papa to name just a few.

I won't lie and say that it was all rainbows and unicorns althought there was a lot of colour. There were times when I had a lump in my throat and a few times the tears ran down my face. I really can't properly put into words how moving and enjoyable this book was for me. After reading hundreds (yes hundreds) of books surrounding WWII you would think that they would all start to read the same. This was absolutely not the case. This was a uniquely beautiful story that would be suitable for readers of all ages. There really isn't anything that I can say other than it is a must read. I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it myself.

I loved every heartbreaking page of this book and won't soon forget it.
