Sara Low is a New York State licensed fishing guide and fly-fishing instructor with more than fifteen years of experience leading fishing trips and teaching fly-fishing to both skilled and novice anglers. Practical advice presented with grace and humor

"A Guide's Guide to Fly-Fishing Mistakes" takes a clever approach to instructing anglers whether novice or experienced: frame the problem by anecdote and explanation, and then present the "fix". I did not get the impression that the author's intent in writing this book was to deliver a technical dissertation or to enlighten the most learned of fly fishing afficianados. For mere mortals, an easy and entertaining read is often the best way to learn something new, and even more so when the learning is meant to be recreational. There is a lot of good common sense in this book, common sense that has been described in other works and in other ways since humans first attached a hook to a line. When faced with a stream filled with rising trout, and only half into my waders and with rod not yet strung, common sense has a way of getting left on the bank along with the gear I forgot to strap on before dashing into the water. A book like "A Guide's Guide" is a great way to reinforce basic principles and finer details when I can't fish but have time to think/dream about fishing. This book accomplishes that by a fusion of practicality, grace and humor. Highly recommended.

A Guides Guide to Fly-Fishing Mistakes

I have been fishing for over 45 years and I am a member of the IGFA, which is the International Game Fishing Assoc. and the North American Fishing Club. I have had great success fishing without the aid of a boat and will continue to do so. I have recently taken up fly fishing and with my thirst for knowledge I have read many books on the subject.

I have recently read Ms. Low's book and it is truly a great read with outstanding information on the subject. The book advised me on everything from selecting the proper equipment and how to use it, to where and when to fish. This is an exciting adventure I'm on and I thank Ms. Low for
sharing her extensive knowledge on the subject which she gained from years of fishing and being a Fly-Fishing Guide.

If you want to learn about any subject you go to the experts, and Ms. Low is one of them.

I would advised any fisherman who wants to either learn how to fly fish or become better at the sport to read this book. Its very well written and illustrated and a must read for novice to expert.

Worth buying only for the occasional laugh...

I purchased this book for my husband who is not only a devoted fly fisher completely immersed in every aspect of fly fishing, but who is also a scholar of fishing literature, old and new. Our library of books on the subject number over 400 books, books dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s and up to the current year, covering the history of fly fishing as well as technical books on fly tying. It is a rare book that he has not read on this subject matter.

My husband does not have his own Amazon account, and since I was the one who purchased this book for him, I write this review on his behalf, based on what he has told me.

In his own words, this was his initial take on this book:

"This is an extremely fundamental treatment, often sophomoric and laughably anthropomorphic, which will have questionable value even to the most rank beginner."

Much ---if not all--- of the advice contained herein has been previously published in other better written books. One cannot be certain why a book like this came to be published, but it is interesting to research the publisher and then note who has endorsed the book on the back cover. There appears to be a 'relative' connection to the publisher (Skyhorse Publishing) and at least one of the rave reviewers. I have no idea who the only other reviewer here on Amazon is (posted previously in June of 2013), but it is his only review here on Amazon, thus I wonder if he has a vested interest somehow. Or perhaps he is a friend of the author's.

Here are an example of the pseudo-wisdom you will find within, to give you an idea of the type of advice contained herein.

Ms. Low gives this advice under the title, "When the Fish Don't Respond."

"If fish are not taking the insects that are hatching, switch to a pattern known to work in that area." (p.165)

My husband's comment on this, rather lame, advice is that this situation is known as a masked hatch and its solution is discussed widely in the literature. To dismiss it as she does without further comment demonstrates a lack of knowledge on the subject matter.

But it's Ms. Low's anthropomorphic take on nature that brought about the loudest guffaws. This is what she wrote in discussing snags:

"That's why Mother Nature invented leaves and decreed that they fall from trees in autumn. Leaves float down a stream and snag on hooks. Many an unsuspecting fly fisher mistakes the tug of a maple leaf for the bite of a rainbow. It's a thrill, and you should enjoy it while it lasts. ...

"A tug on your line could be a fish or a leaf. You never know, so enjoy the thrill." (Pp. 148-149)

Ah, yes! The thrill of snagging a floating leaf down, "The river [that] has a limited time to get where it's going..." (p. 147)

Mother Nature--ever the prankster!

Unfortunately, my husband gained nothing from this book other than a moment of astonishment that it was ever published. Not only was it a waste of money on my part and valuable time on his part, but it's an embarrassment to the legions of great writers who have contributed valuable advice and wisdom to the sport. This book does not in any way embrace or respect that storied tradition.

I know that in writing this review I will elicit numerous "unhelpful" clicks as is always the case with 'critical' reviews, but please know, I am being completely honest in my assessment of this book, based on my husband's reading of it, his sharing of his opinion, and my own novice understanding of the sport. I have no personal reason to be critical of the author or the publishers of this book, knowing neither, and I write this only to provide an honest opinion of the book for the prospective buyer. If you're still interested in buying this book, I have listed our copy for resale. It's 'almost' new, read only once. Cheap.

I have been in search of another great travel story since I finished The Long Way Round and The Long Way Down by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman and this is most definitely it. Levison Wood makes Bear Gryll's look like an amateur with his fantastic story of his trek up the Nile - crocodiles, pythons, close encounters with rebel forces, this book has it all

Great read...

This was a really interesting read, I learned so much about the areas along the Nile, the people, vegetation, animals, previous explorers and political problems still ongoing in a lot of the areas.
Levison Wood, a former British soldier, a writer and explorer decides he wants to be the first to have walked the whole length of the Nile, a journey that would take him 4,250 miles and through many diverse landscapes. When asked why he wanted to do this journey, his ultimate response was “The Nile was there and I wanted to walk it.”
He had Guides that walked with him through different parts of the continent, needing to change as the languages did. Friends and reporters would occasionally walk small part with him. There was Tragedy, fear and amazement to witness throughout this journey. This is a journey well worth reading.

Crocodiles and AIDS and war and greed, Oh My!

Levison Wood, right at the beginning of his travelogue, echoing the mountaineer George Mallory's raison d'être for climbing Mt. Everest, states that he wanted to walk the length of the Nile “Because it's there.” He then amends that statement, saying that he wanted to follow in a great tradition, to achieve something unusual and inspire others, but that much of his motivation was selfish - to go on a great adventure, to test himself. (Kindle location 67) Later he further refines those objectives to a more external, less personal, focus: “to see how [the Nile] shaped lives from the ground, day by day and mile by mile.” (Kindle location 137)

He starts his story not at the beginning of his trek, but in the middle as he encounters the front lines of the Sudanese civil war, where he witnesses rocket fire and an angry mob who wants to kill anyone who may be associated with the United Nations (and, as a white Britisher, he could easily be mistaken for one and shot on sight!) The story then moves back in time to the beginning of the trek, in December, 2013, in the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda, to a tiny spring sprouting a trickle of water from a hole in a rock, claimed by an agent of the National Tourist Board of Rwanda to be the source of the furthest tributary of the Nile. Wood provides a bit of history, linking his forthcoming journey to Alexander the Great and the Roman Emperor Nero, to Stanley and Livingston and Speke, and rooting it in historical and geographic controversy (Lake Victoria is the commonly accepted origin of the White Nile.)

And so, Wood sets off, determined to walk every step of the entire 4,250 mile length of the Nile (measured from the Rwandan spring.) We learn quite a bit about the guides and friends who accompany him through different stages of the trek, and the history and details of the living conditions of the villagers and inn-keepers whom he encounters. We learn about the physical difficulties he and his compatriots face - searing heat, blisters, thirst - but actually little about his own personal discomfort. In the manner of the notable British explorers who preceded him, he soldiers on.

That doesn't mean that he isn't affected by those travails. After all, the group faces many dangerous circumstances, from single-minded crocodiles and hippos in the deep jungle to heat exhaustion in the Sahara Desert to AIDS in the villages to war. Indeed, death does overtake the party, causing some soul-searching in Woods. He wonders if continuing the pursuit of his goal at the risk of the lives of his compatriots is too selfish.

While the physical difficulties of the trek are discussed, the majority of the focus is on the societal difficulties Wood faces and that the people met along the way endure - the problems at the borders as he passes through Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt, the collapsing economies and infrastructure, famine, war, and the greed of the police and military personnel.

On the 30th of August, 2014, after 271 days of trekking, he reaches the Mediterranean port of Rashid (the place where the Rosetta Stone was discovered), in Egypt. Here the Nile waters complete their long journey and a changed Wood realizes, in contrast to his attitude at the beginning of the venture, that he had only gotten through his journey due to the kindness of strangers, the normal people that he had met day to day - a most unselfish understanding born out from all of the events experienced in his story.

"Negotiauctions" is essential reading for anyone considering the sale of valuable assets. Subramanian begins by pointing out that assets most often change hands neither through pure negotiation or pure auction, but through mechanisms the combine elements of both. He identifies three strategies readers can use in complex deal-making strategies. The book also examines case studies involving buying a house, the rights to TV show 'Frasier,' and selling 'toxic' assets into the government's bailout fund.

BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement, or What do you do if you don't reach a deal?) for NBC in the Frasier case probably meant a bidding war to replace 'Frasier.' Each participant needs to estimate that for all participants. They also need to determine their 'reservation value' - the lowest amount they would accept as seller or pay as buyer. When negotiating, suggests making a first offer as high/low as one can "tell a story around." Those on the receiving end of a first offer should strongly consider the 'mid-point rule' in shaping their counteroffer. A win-win move is to introduce 'contingent contracts' to align the incentives of both parties (eg. ratings-based increases/decreases) that also permit diagnosing the other sides' honesty.

"When to Auction" is a fairly mundane chapter.

"Negotiauctions" also covers creating illusions via sealed bids with comments such as "You're the low bidder" (when there's only one bidder), leaving pizza boxes from supposedly prior due diligence efforts, artificially limiting slots for due diligence, survivor rounds, etc.

Subramanian suggests sealed bids instead of open outcry, except in the presence of 'affiliated signals' (eg. the opportunity to learn a competitor is willing to bid high).

Stalking horse bids are used in bankruptcy proceedings by sellers to prevent lowball offers.

Explains reverse auctions, Dutch auctions, English, and Japanese auctions.

Again - must reading for anyone considering the sale of valuable assets.

Dealmaking is very complex and not for everyone

A good deal is when both parties feel OK about the deal. A great deal is when one party feels they got the best deal. Professor Subramanian provides detailed insights into three primary dealmaking situations. The preferred one is called "negotiauctions". This book challenged me. I have always have been in deals involving customers, sales, product teams, and more recently, K-12 grade learners.

The book is heavy with theory, jargon (ZOPA), and sometimes just too much detail. In fairness, it had some great "real" behind the scene case studies concerning the Fraiser TV show with NBC and Paramount; the baseball deal with A-Rod (Alex Rodriquez) and the Texas Rangers; Pittsburgh Steelers sale of their football franchise in 2008; and the U.S government's involvement with TARP funds for the toxic assets of the Sachs bank.

This book was not fun reading but I did learn. It was a good value (about $12 on Amazon) compared to taking a course at Harvard by the professor. If you want to improve your dealmaking on a car or a house (on the average, realtors take longer to sell their houses than their clients do study), then just read Chapter 10 and learn about a great concept called shut-down moves. Dealmaking is more complex in the 21 century and this book proves it. I would recommend this book to professional sales people or buyers but not for the average professional as it may be too over the top.

For anyone who likes Freakonomics-style books, this is great. The writing is clear and the topic compelling. If you have any interest in deal-making, markets, negotiation, auctions, or are just a smart, curious person who wants to learn a little more about how things are bought and sold, this is a nearly-perfect book. You won't look at ebay, or buying a new car, the same again.

Angelique L’Amour was born in Los Angeles, California. The daughter of author Louis L’Amour, she grew up in the household of a prolific writer where writing and storytelling were a way of life. In 1988 Angelique created and edited a volume of quotes from her father’s works. Published by Bantam Doubleday Dell in 1988, A Trail of Memories spent 16 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was also a Publisher’s Weekly bestseller for 1988. You know how the worst part of any new path in life is the not knowing? Well this book takes one of the hardest situations and breaks it down so you can take a deep breath and say..."okay, I can see how to do this". I wish it was handed out right in the oncologist's office. Because it starts right off talking about how to talk to your kids, one of the first things you're going to do when you get home! Thank you for this book. I'm going to keep one on my shelf to hand a friend if they need it.

Do you have a young writer in your house?

This is a superb book if you have an aspiring writer or just a child who likes to use words. It is laid out in a cute, fun and easy to read style. The pictures are delightful! Even if your child is a bit resistant to reading this book, the pictures will engage him or her.
You and your child will find such helpful information. He'll learn how to pick a subject and how to proofread a final draft. This book isn't just for the aspiriting author but is also wonderful to use in elementary school to get those papers done!
Your child will learn how to start a journal (a terrific way of expressing oneself), write a poem, (riddle or play) or write a fantasy story. He will also learn how to get ready to take a test with some test taking skills.
There is a section on how to use capital letters and punctuation and finally full color maps, an historical time-line and the metric system.
Other helpful sections in the book include helping your child manage his time, writing a speech. The one negative is that there is a section on using the card catelogue in the library. This book was written in 1995 and although many schools still use them, children are learning to look up books through the computer.
I definitely recommend this book to have in your home to help your child with his writing skills or to inspire the budding author. If you are a teacher this is a great book to have in the classroom.

A Personal Favorite from Way Back When

I was searching for this title to include in a personal essay (fittingly enough), and after I found it, I felt compelled to write a review. My parents got me this book after I showed an interest in writing during late grade school. I loved it. I devoured the sections on fiction and play writing and would leaf through the appendix just for fun. I returned to this book over and over again through middle school. One creative writing degree later, I think it's safe to say this book works! If you have a kiddo who's interested in writing (or who's simply inquisitive in general), I highly recommend you purchase this book for them. It's a great way to get kids inspired while giving them a bit of direction.

Colorful and Engaging

My girls are using this for my home schooled girls and son. The text is fun and easy to follow for many ages. I enjoy teaching our language using this book alone (4th-5th graders).

About the Author

Daniel Sauter is an artist and educator with eight years of experience teaching Processing. His work has been shown internationally in numerous exhibitions in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Sauter is an Associate Professor of New Media Arts at University of Illinois at Chicago, and organizer of the Chicago Mobile Processing Conference.

Ho-ly Cow. Where have you been all my life?

So maybe the title of my review is a bit dramatic. But I must say that, upon reading the first fifty or so pages, that very thought crossed my mind: Why have I been working so hard to develop Android apps when such a pleasant route to the same destination exists? Mr. Sauter is an excellent guide, speaking like an old friend, mapping out the quickest way of getting from point A to point B. The book takes you through several interesting projects, but the understanding conveyed to you generates a hundred more possibilities. And while it's been said there is no perfect metaphor, you know there is no perfect programming book. There are a couple of typo-level mistakes to be found in the book (I plan on adding to the errata page soon), and I know that can be frustrating, especially when one is in the vulnerable state of learning complex semantics. But don't throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. In my humble opinion the book is worth the price of admission. If you disagree, perhaps you can recoup a portion of the selling price via Amazon's Marketplace. I say give it a shot and buy the book. One caveat: you should probably be comfortable with the fundamentals of a curly-bracketed computer language like java, javascript, PHP, Perl or any flavor of C. If you have any question about that, download the Processing package and play with it first. Then feast on this banquet of a book.

I had a lot of problems getting the Processing software ...

I had a lot of problems getting the Processing software to work. The Processing forum seemed to indicate a lot of people had the same or similar issues. Since this book is all about using the Processing software to build Android apps that made using this book extremely frustrating.

Processing developers can leverage Android device sensors, multitouch and cameras using this book

Having dabbled in Processing for a couple of years before finding this book, I was very satisfied with the breadth of coverage this book offers on implementing the Ketai library, which the author developed and maintained. As of late 2015, each example still works on my Galaxy Note 4 running Android 5.1.1. and I can access and use all the sensors on the device (usually I build targeting Android 4.2.2). In my opinion, this book is a gem that answered a lot of questions I had in the back of my mind on how to do x with Processing in Android mode. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to utilize multi-touch, accelerometers, GPS, cameras among the many other sensors Android devices employ.
